Indian Institutes of Technology

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous public technical and research institutes located across India. It is under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Education, Government of India. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which has declared them as Institutes of National Importance and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance. The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists twenty-three institutes. Each IIT is autonomous, linked to the others through a common council (IIT Council), which oversees their administration.

How to get into IIT ?

All students who want to know how to get into IIT must understand this in detail. Every student aspiring for admission to an IIT has to first appear for the JEE mains examination. Once qualified, he/she has to appear for the JEE Advanced Examination. Only if a student clears JEE Advanced and obtains an All India Rank (AIR), she/he can take admission into the IITs.

What is JEE Main Exam?

The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and Central Board of Secondary education (CBSE), New Delhi introduced the national level common entrance exam called Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted for admission to various engineering colleges in India.  The major development in JEE Main is the exam will be held twice a year for admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programmes in IITs, NIT’s, IIIT’s and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions.

The Joint Entrance Exam will be conducted in two stages – JEE Main and JEE Advanced. JEE (Main) replaced the AIEEE entrance exam and JEE (Advanced) replaced the IIT-JEE entrance exam. Every year, over 25,000 Engineering and Architecture seats will be filled through the JEE Main score.

The aim of the common entrance test has been mooted to reduce stress on students, who have to appear for multiple entrance examinations and to give greater relevance to the school education, especially the class 12 board examinations.

The Joint Entrance Exam will be conducted in two stages –

  1. JEE Mains
  2. JEE Advance
